Mohsen Vatandoost

Lecturer of Architecture

Mohsen Vatandoost is a lecturer at the Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Michigan. Mohsen has studied both structural (M.Sc.) and architectural design (M.Arch.) and received his Ph.D. from the University of Tehran. In his interdisciplinary research, he endeavored to bridge the gap between structural and architectural engineering. His thesis centered on the form-finding and optimization of thin structures, specifically shell structures, by utilizing different swarm-based and meta-heuristic algorithms.

His previous investigations include the structural assessment and enhancement of bespoke, non-standard-size, robotically manufactured reclaimed timber trusses. Currently, he is focused on developing an integrated workflow, from ‘design to fabrication’ to achieve large-scale 3D-printed formworks for complex concrete structures, including double-curvature concrete shell structures and hollow core sections. Within the realm of structural design, his research interests center on additive manufacturing, optimization, low-carbon construction, robotic construction, and machine learning.
